How to Recover Deleted Files Lost in Cut and Paste
Sometimes we use cut and paste to move files around. But accidents can hit unexpectedly. When the transfer process goes wrong, files seem to have disappeared into oblivion. Is there a way to retrieve files lost in cut and paste?
What happens when we cut and paste?
When we move a file to another volume the file is first copied and stored in random-access memory (RAM), a volatile type of memory that retains the data only when the power is on. This is why the clipboard is always empty when a computer is restarted. When the copying is done, the file will be deleted from the original directory. Just like normal deletion, only the reference to that file is deleted. The actual data – clusters of 1s and 0s – physically remain on the storage medium. Moving a file within a volume doesn’t result in data movement at all which explains why copying within the same volume is much faster (almost instantaneous) than moving files to different drives or partitions.
What to do when we lose files using cut and paste?
First and foremost, never put anything new into that partition. Although deleted files remain in their raw form, the space they take will be seen as free. The filesystem will put new files to any available free space if needed. If new files overwrite the deleted file data, the previous cluster of 1s and 0s will be rearranged to form the new data, rendering the deleted files permanently gone.
