Undeleted Files from USB Flash Drives
I have an 8GB USB Iomega drives. When I delete files from it, they do not appear in the OS’s recycle bin. Is there a recycle bin for USB drives or are files just deleted?
If you click Yes when prompted to delete files from your USB flash drive then you’ll probably not going to find them in the Recycle Bin. Deletion is a bit different when it comes to removable storage devices. Usually, Recycle Bin is considered the safe net where we can restore accidentally deleted files. But when we delete files from removable storage devices such as USB flash drives, these files will be deleted permanently, without going to the Recycle Bin.
Why Are Files Permanently Deleted from USB Flash Drives?
Different operating system and files system may have different approaches regarding Recycle Bin. In Windows 7/8/10 with NTFS file system, a hidden $Recycle.Bin folder is created under each drive to store deleted files. Windows Desktop Recycle Bin is not an actual folder that can hold data. It is a virtual folder that only collects the information such as names, original locations and deleted date about the deleted files and presents to us in a user-friendly manner so that we can view, restore or permanent delete these files.
Storage devices that are considered as “removable” – such as CDs or USB flash drives – do not have this recycle bin folder. Different operating systems also treat the concept of “removable” slightly differently. For example, some external hard drives are “removable” in nature but are considered as “hard drives” and have their own recycle bins created by the system. In short, if the system sees the storage device as “removable storage medium”, it will not assign a recycle folder to it and files deleted from this storage medium will be directly deleted and won’t be displayed in desktop Recycle Bin.
